I don't have your email but a colleague, @chapmandavid , forwarded me suggestions for your question on TW yesterday:

Five Advantages:
1. Extension/increase of/in "community" of the classroom (especially if it extends beyond class time).
2. Response and class participation.
3. Method to help facilitate group projects.
4. Captures and involves nonverbal students who are(!) interested.

Five Disadvantages:
1. Distracting for some students, whether in classroom or as an outside assignment.
2. Some may not have technology available (depends on the institution, relative wealth of student body).
3. Loss of control of task, if in classroom (side Twittering going on).
4. Usage of grammar/citations/sourcing in 140 character streams.
5. Unmotivated or technically-challenged students.

I cannot believe that Virginia tweeted about all the details of her new job the way she did. I can understand being excited about a new job, but in my opinion common sense should have told her not to tweet about every detail of her new found job. If she had simply googled her new employer Kelly Cutrone she would have known what a no-nonsense environment she was applying for. With the clientele that People's Revolution has I'm not surprised they asked Virgina not to come back. She had a case of Twitter TMI, which is unfortunate, but I guarantee the lesson she learned will not be forgotten.
