A Bit About My Blog

Public Relations Matters is a blog published occasionally by me, Barbara B. Nixon, Ph.D. (ABD). Topics you’ll find here include public relations and public communication. Most of the posts are geared toward my students.

A Bit About Me

Before joining Southeastern University‘s faculty in 2010, I held a variety of positions ranging from leadership in Fortune 500 corporations to college educator in both faith-based and public universities. I firmly believe that in “In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists” (Eric Hoffer). Students in my courses often find themselves exploring public relations theory in light of current world developments and technology.

My journey to Southeastern was definitely a circuitous one. After growing up in a small town in Maine, I moved to Atlanta for high school, then completed my BA and MA at Auburn University. I married my college sweetheart, Kevin Nixon, and together we have lived in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Georgia and now Florida; these relocations were a blend of military and corporate moves. Before moving to Florida, I completed my coursework and comprehensive examination for her Ph.D. in Training and Performance Improvement at Capella University. I am currently completing my dissertation in leadership development in a faith-based organization. My husband and I husband have four children, two college-aged and two in middle school.

In the Southeastern Department of Communication, I serve as public relations professor and interim chair of the department. I am a member of the Florida Public Relations Association and the Presbyterian Communicators Network, am a past president and life member of the International Listening Association, and serve in a leadership role within the Vine Community at First United Presbyterian Church of Lakeland.

I teach across the Public Relations and Journalism spectrum at Southeastern University, including the following courses: Public Relations Applications, Journalism, Writing for Public Relations and Advertising, Corporate Public Relations, Communication Seminar and Social Media for Public Relations and Journalism. I am the advisor to the SEU Florida Public Relations Club. My research interests include social media’s impact on business and society; leadership development; listening; and volunteerism.

    Hello Proffessor,

I Just stumbled onto your blog while researching helpful PR sites for students. I unfortunately decided late what I wanted to do with my career after college and now that I am a junior at a small school lacking any type of PR program, I have been trying to figure out what to do to build experience and learn more about something I have become passionate about. I have successful switched my major to Marketing which is as close as I’ll get at this point. I have been looking at your class assignments and I am hoping with your permission I can go in and complete some of them as well. Your blog has been very helpful in teaching me things I would have learned in a regular program. I would love to email/chat with you further.

    Sincerely,
    Marnise T.

Hey Barbara – I love the fact that you’re using web 2.0 in the classroom… How exactly do you use it? During specific activites… or just during lectures? Just curious. :)
