PRCA 3330: Web 2.0 Scavenger Hunt

Though our discussions this semester in PRCA 3330 at Georgia Southern University, you probably are aware that public relations students should know about Web 2.0. If you need a refresher on what Web 2.0 is, see the video below. (You do not need audio to benefit from the video; there are no spoken words in the video.)

For Monday’s class, you’ll be divided into groups. Based on the group you’re in, do some quick research and brainstorming on your assigned Web 2.0 concept:

  • RSS, including readers/aggregators
  • Podcasting
  • Microblogging
  • Blogging
  • Tagging, including social bookmarks
  • Social Media Press Release
  • Social networking
  • Wikis

Each person in your group should respond to these questions by using the Comments feature. You can either answer directly in your Comment, or provide a hyperlink to your blog, and respond in your own blog.

  • What does the concept mean? (Briefly define the concept, including a hyperlink.)
  • What are some examples of service providers? (Include hyperlinks)
  • In general, how is the concept relevant for public relations students (or practitioners)?
  • How could you apply the concept for your client for this class? (You do not need to identify your client, unless you want to.)

  1. 1) What does the concept mean? (Briefly define the concept, including a hyperlink.)
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

    2) What are some examples of service providers? (Include hyperlinks)
    Ecommerce RSS 2.0 Module
    Media RSS 2.0 Module
    OpenSearch RSS 2.0 Module

    3) In general, how is the concept relevant for public relations students (or practitioners)?
By using RSS, PR practitioners can have the news come to them as opposed to having to search the web for news. Pr practitioners need to have the news at their finger tips all the time and RSS is a way to make their jobs easier.
    4) How could you apply the concept for your client for this class? (You do not need to identify your client, unless you want to.)
This would benefit my client by allowing them to have direct access to other Houses across the globe. The could be able to see what other Houses are doing to raise money or to “lift” the spirits of the children and their families.

RSS for Public Relations means increased efficiency and timeliness in monitoring news and opinions. It also provides an alternate channel for communicating directly with your audience. The simple fact about RSS is that it is becoming a useful mechanism for reading and publishing content online. It means that publishers can cut through the spam filter directly to their readers as long as their content is relevant and well written. Furthermore, publishers can attract people to leave their RSS Readers to go directly to the source website with a little intelligence.

RSS could be good for my client because they could subscribe to blogs or podcasts that relate to them and could easily recieve updates on those sites at any time without having to go looking for them.

  3. A tag is a relevant keyword or term (or more than one) associated with or assigned to a piece of information (a picture, a geographic map, a blog entry, a video clip etc.), thus describing the item and enabling keyword-based classification and search of information.

Some service providers are : http://www.delicious.com, a social bookmarking site. But you can also use tags on sites like http://www.technorati.com, and http://www.fickr.com.

Tagging is a good way to organize information on the web into different categories so you can find it easier. Tagging also adds a link to supplementary information or topics including videos and pictures.

Tagging could be relevant with my client in many ways. The first is on our Kappa Sigma @ Georgia Southern website. We tag many pictures and videos of our events and brothers on here for the incoming rushees and everyone else to see. Also if we make a Facebook group for an event, we tag pictures and such on there to add to the interest of the event. Also with taggging, the officers of the fraternity can get important information to everyone simply by tagging them with it.

  4. The concept of social networking is provide online forums that allow peopel within several or just a few netwrorks of a community that share similar interests in activities and/or ideas

Some examples of service providers: http://www.Myspace.com, http://www.Facebook.com, Blackplanet.com

In general the concept is relevant to understanding other ways that people are interacting w/ new media technologies and once that is understood, P R practitioners are able to properly go through networks and present the proper information to the right network of individuals.

I could apply this concept for my client by attaining any social media forum and allowing open access to those wanting to find out more about the organization.

  5. 1.) The concept of social networking is a group of individuals coming together to build a relationship whether it is purely business or simply just conversations with the other millions of people online.

2.)You can do this by using myspace, facebook, blackplanet, and even blog sites…
    http://www.myspace.com
    http://www.facebook.com
    http://www.blackplanet.com
    http://www.blogger.com

3.)The concept of social networking is extremely relevant to Public Relations Practioners because it is vital that the Practioner maintains a relationship between an organization and its’ publics. One can’t possibly get anything done being quite.

4.) I could apply this concept by maintaining blogs with other Young Marine Units around the Country as well as Drill Instructors could have their own blogspot to communicate with others(Drill Instructors) for numerous military related ideas and or concepts to training their Youth and Staff!

  6. -Podcasting-a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast
    -Some services providers are:Utterz.com, iTunes.com, Doppler.com
-This concept is relevant for public relations students/practitioners because it is like a News Release but just broadcasting over the Internet which allows the information to be expressed faster and easier than in written form.
-I could apply Podcasting to my client, Zeta Tau Alpha, for updating the weekly or monthly events that ZTA is hosting or going to be involved with. It is much easier for the audience to hear about an event then taking the time to read about what is going on. The sisters of ZTA could even benefit from it by using it for chapter meetings, instead of everyone meeting at the ZTA house, a podcast could be posted by the President and everyone would just have to listen to the podcast when they had some free time.

  7. 1. Podcasting is an online listening option. Giving readers a chance to hear where, what time and how they receieve the message.
    2. Utterz.com, iTunes.com, Doppler.com.
    3. When it comes to public relations, your always expected to talk or give some sort of verbal explanation. Podcasting allows PR practitioners the ability to communicate faster and more efficiently to their clients.
    4. This would be good for Girl Talk because i could set up podcasts to some of the middle and high scool divisions and give new and exciting tips on how to make Girl Talk easier and more relaxing for the girls. Provide detailed descriptions of certain activities that are coming up. Even provide a way for handicapped girls who may be blind or have a hard time reading the opportunity to feel like they are no diffrent than anyone else.

    * Wikipedia, Wikipaint.com & Wikispaces.com

    * A Wiki Community can be created that is private and not “open to everyone” like Wikipedia. Public Relations Professionals could create (if they haven’t already) a PR Wiki, where they can share opinions, experiences, etc. about field.

    * As for PR Professionals, a client could create a Wiki Community for their foundation. This would help get new information out to the public at little to no cost and at a very rapid pace.

  9. 1.) Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.
A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language ( Wikipedia.com, http://www.wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki)

2.)For example, the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best known wikis. A wolfwiki is a Collaborative Resource Collections Built as Part of a Course for example:Social Justice – Columbia University ( Wikipedia.com,

3.)To share ideas, and create a wiki community for PR practitioners, or students to communicate.

4.) This could help my client by spreading new information, and adding new information. This is probably the easiest and fastest way to get updated information by all who want to contribute. My client could benefit from this in new studies for babies health, or even just tips from experts or parents.
